The Conservators of the River Cam are carrying out a review of their Code of Practice for Commercial Punt Operators. The Code was published in 2004 and it became mandatory in 2005 for operators to comply with its terms and conditions as a pre-requisite for punt registration. Many of the Code’s expectations of owners and masters of punts are already contained in the Conservators' byelaws. Other aspects of the Code relate to best practice for the Cam navigation based on practical management experience.
The Code was last reviewed in 2006. Since that time, there has been a marked change in the number of punt-based businesses operating on the River Cam. The Conservators have agreed that it would be appropriate to review the Code before the next licensing year. This review will also provide an opportunity for the Code to be referenced to operating guidelines set down by other local authorities for passenger vessels on the inland waterways
The Conservators are inviting comment from a wide range of stakeholders on the proposed options in the review document, enclosed. Responses must be received at the Conservators’ offices by Friday 3rd December 2010.
Feedback will be incorporated into a report which will be taken to the Conservators’ meeting on Thursday 13th January 2011 as a Matter for Decision.
The suspension of navigation affecting Baits Bite Lock on Tuesday 18 October and Wednesday 19 October 2011 is now cancelled. We are pleased to report that the Conservancy’s contracting engineers have completed their half-yearly mechanical and electrical inspection of the lock structure.
Works to the downstream landing stage are ongoing and we should like to remind lock users about the temporary landing arrangements to the north of the construction site.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this short suspension of navigation.
NOTICE is hereby given under Section 25 of the 1922 River Cam Conservancy Act (byelaw 3) that navigation on the River Cam between the Fort St George Public House and Cutter Ferry footbridge will be suspended between the hours of 19.00 hr and 20.00 hr on Saturday 5th November 2011.1.
This suspension of navigation is to ensure public safety during the annual fireworks display at Midsummer Common. River users must follow the marshals’ instructions in attendance.
