Bridge Heights

Headroom clearances for each bridge are listed below from the head of navigation at Bishop’s Mill Weir, in downstream order. The figure quoted is the minimum headroom clearance from normal water retention level at the mid-span of the central arch, where applicable. Conversions from metric to imperial have been rounded down to the nearest inch.

Jesus Lock

Operation: manual, v-doors both ends

Baits Bite Lock

Operation: automatic, guillotine gate upstream, v-doors downstream
Width: 4.3 m (14 ft 1 in)
Minimum depth: 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in)
Headroom (footbridge): 3.0 m (9 ft 10 in)
Length: 30.5 m (100 ft)

Bottisham Lock (Environment Agency)

Operation: automatic, guillotine gate upstream, v-doors downstream
Width: 4.5 m (14 ft 9 in)
Minimum depth: 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in)
Headroom (footbridge): 3.1 m (10 ft 2 in)
Length: 29.85 m (97 ft 11 in)

 


Rules of The River

Normal rules of navigation generally apply on the Cam, but beware that at certain points navigation changes sides of the river. There are clear signs to indicate where this happens. There is a speed limit of 11 kph between Bottisham and Baits Bite locks and 8 kph between Baits Bite Lock and the Mill Pool. It is expressly not permitted to use any water scooter, jet ski, wave runner, water bike or sea doo.

Sound Signals

Standard sound signals apply to vessels using the River Cam (in accordance with international collision avoidance regulations).

■ One short blast*: I am altering my course to STARBOARD (to the right)

■■ Two short blasts: I am altering my course to PORT (to the left)

■■■ Three short blasts: My engines are going ASTERN (reversing)

■■■■ ▬ Four short blasts, one long blast **: I am turning around with my bow swinging to STARBOARD (to the right, clockwise turn)

■■■■ ▬ ▬ Four short blasts, two long blasts *: I am turning around with my bow swinging to PORT (to the left, anticlockwise turn)

■■■■■ Five blasts: your intentions aren’t clear (what are you doing?)

* a short blast is about one second’s duration
** a prolonged blast lasts from 4 to 6 seconds duration
